Shirley: The Voice That Survived tells the story of Shirley Crowley Thompson, a woman whose life was shaped by hardship, music, family, education, and extraordinary resilience.
Born into difficult circumstances, Shirley endured painful experiences during her childhood before moving to California as a teenager. There, she began building a new life grounded in education, independence, and determination.
Her talent eventually led her into the Los Angeles music scene, where she performed with the Lorenzo Holden Orchestra and recorded “My Devotion” “Just A Night Girl” and “It Ain’t To Play With.” Although her dream of lasting success in music remained unfinished, her voice and influence continued through the family she raised and the lives she touched.
Shirley became more than a singer. She was a mother, educator, provider, and survivor. Her strength helped guide her children through change, struggle, and opportunity while preserving the importance of family and perseverance.
Marquise Thompson wrote this memoir to honor his mother, preserve her history, and give future generations the opportunity to know the woman behind the music. Her story is one of survival, sacrifice, and a voice that refused to disappear.

Writing Shirley: The Voice That Survived was more than documenting my mother’s life. It was an opportunity to understand her more deeply, preserve the parts of her story that might otherwise be lost, and honor the sacrifices she made for our family.
As her son, I knew her as a mother, provider, educator, and source of strength. Through this memoir, I also came to know the young woman who dreamed of a life in music, endured painful circumstances, and continued moving forward when life demanded more from her than it should have.
This book is my way of preserving her voice for my son, our family, and future generations. It is also for anyone who has survived hardship, carried an unfinished dream, or wondered whether their story still matters.
Shirley’s story matters. Her voice survived.
